Fraud Reduction Tips

  • If an online deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • When ordering online, it is best to stick with sites you are already familiar with or the more well-known online names  and established retailers that have a good online reputation.
  • Beware of holiday e-cards, especially if they come from someone who typically does not send you emails. Never download software in order to access an e-card.
  • Make sure you log off completely when finished with online transactions and never allow your browser to "remember" your username and password information.
  • If you are mailing checks, it is best to send these items from the post office, as opposed to your home mailbox, where they are easily accessible to mail thieves. You might also find out if your financial institution offers a more secure way to send money. Vantage West offers a product called "POPMoney" -- which allows you to securely send money to other peoples’ accounts.
  • If you make online purchases, be sure your computer is securely set up with personal firewalls and security software packages, anti-virus protection and spyware detection features.
  • When you make online purchases or access your online financial accounts, make sure the page is secure. Look for “https” and a closed padlock symbol in the web page browser to be sure the site is secure.
  • Always confirm with online retailers that they have proper Internet security in place before responding to any e-mail request.
  • Protect your passwords and PIN numbers. It is best not use obvious choices such as, mother's maiden name, your birth date, pet's name, consecutive letters or numbers or anything else that could easily be discovered by thieves. It's better to create passwords that combine capital and lowercase letters, numbers and punctuation, if possible. It is always safer to memorize passwords than to write them down.
  • Create a list of all your credit card and financial institution information including account numbers and telephone numbers and store it in a secure place. If you find your card missing or stolen immediately notify your financial institution.
  • Don’t fall for phishing (email) or SMShing (text) attacks, which often try to lure personal financial information by pretending to be your financial institution. Financial institutions will never request personal or account information via text or email. If you ever suspect a fraudulent email from your financial institution or any other business, call them at the number which is posted on their website.
  • If your identity is ever compromised, it can be a hassle to get back on track. Vantage West Credit Union offers FREE ID Theft Resolution Services to Premium Checking Account holders and free information for everyone at this educational website which offers helpful tips.
